[cp. Matt 13:55; Acts 1:14; 15:13], a slave
of God and of [the] Lord Jesus Christ, To the Twelve Tribes who are in the
Dispersion [i.e. the scattering of Jews outside of Judea]: Greetings!
2Consider [it] all joy, my brothers [and
sisters], whenever you* encounter various trials, 3knowing that the
testing of your* faith produces patient endurance. 4But be letting
that patient endurance have a perfect work [or, full effect], so that you* shall
be perfect [or, mature] and complete--lacking in nothing. 5Now if any
of you* lacks wisdom, let him be asking from God, the One giving generously to
all and not denouncing [or, without criticizing], and it will be given to him. 6But
let him be asking in faith, doubting nothing. For the one doubting has been
likened to a wave of the sea, being driven by wind and tossed about. 7For
let not that person be supposing that he will receive anything from the Lord. 8[That
one is] a double-minded [or, an indecisive] man, unstable in all his ways.
9Now let the lowly brother [or, brother
of humble circumstances] be rejoicing in his exaltation, 10but the
rich [brother] in his humble state, because like a flower of grass he will pass
away. 11For the sun rose with scorching heat and dried up the grass,
and its flower fell off, and the beauty of its appearance perished. So also the
rich [person] in his journeys [fig., in his pursuits of business or wealth] will
12Happy [or, Blessed] [is the] man who
endures temptation [or, testing], because having become approved, he will
receive the victor’s wreath [or, crown] of the life which the Lord promised to
the ones loving Him.
13Let no one say, when tempted, “I am
being tempted by God,” for God is incapable of being tempted by evil, and He
Himself tempts no one. 14But each one is tempted by his own lusts,
being pulled away and enticed. 15Then that lust having conceived
gives birth to sin; then that sin having become full-grown brings forth death. 16Stop
being led astray [fig., being deceived], my beloved brothers [and sisters].
17Every good giving and every perfect
gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no
variation or shadow of turning. 18Having willed, He gave birth to us
by [the] word of truth for the purpose of our being a kind of first-fruits of
His creatures [or, out of His creation].
19So then, my beloved brothers [and
sisters], let every person be swift to hear, slow to speak, [and] slow to anger,
20for [the] anger of a man does not produce the righteousness of God.
21For this reason, you* yourselves having put aside all filthiness
[fig., moral uncleanness] and abundance of evil, in humility receive the
implanted word [within you*], which is able to save your* souls.
22Now continue becoming doers of [the]
word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23Because if anyone
is a hearer of the word and not a doer, this one has been likened to a man
observing his natural face in a mirror, 24for he observed himself and
has gone away, and immediately he forgot what kind of [person] he was. 25But
the one having looked into [the] perfect law, the [law] of liberty, and having
continued [in it], this one--not having become a forgetful hearer but a
doer of work--this one will be happy in his doing.
26If anyone thinks to be religious among you*, [and yet] does not bridle [fig., control] his tongue, but deceives his heart [i.e., entire inner self, including the intellect, volition, and emotions, and elsewhere in epistle], the religion of this one [is] useless. 27Pure and undefiled religion before [our] God and Father is this: to be caring for orphans and widows in their affliction [and] to be keeping oneself unspotted [fig., uncorrupted] by the world.
